Re: Bring Back "Classic Keener"

May 15, 2008 by rockinrobert

Jim,

Thanks for providing the link to John F. Do you know...Is that music library pictured on the honeydripper website located at his own store/home, or was it from the old days at Keener or WOMC? Wherever it's from, it dwarfs my collection (about 300 45s and 100 LPs). I DO have a modest collection of "WKNR Music Guides" spanning the time frame of 10/27/65-3/15/71. I also have 8 copies of a "Come Fly With Keener/Wing It Over Detroit" promo (same size/format as the weekly music guides" for a 1 hr. American Airlines flight around Detroit with Dick Purtan, Scott Regen, or Bob Green on "Saturday, June 18". There is no mention of the YEAR anywhere on the flyer.
Although I wasn't able to listen regularly to Keener after sundown, I did start driving in the summer of '67, so sometimes my buddies and I would cruise up and down either Woodward or Telegraph listening to Keener, so I was quite familiar with Scotty and J. Michael. Even before then, I would listen to Keener till sunset. I DO remember when Scottyburger "skateboarded" into town from Kansas City...and all the hype surrounding that event. Those were the "fun days" of radio!

Jim,
What is John Freist doing these days?...Retired from radio?
I'd love to hear some of his "Keener Collection".
Some Michigan groups that received frequent airplay on Keener 13 aren't even listed on some of the music archive websites. The local group known as The Underdogs (i.e. "Love's Gone Bad", "Man in the Glass", etc.) is nowhere to be found on http://www.allbutforgottenoldies.net
I wonder why?...maybe just an oversight?

I recall reading some of your posts on the now defunct CKLW Discussion Forum. I loved both stations in their heyday, but since I grew up on the northeast side of Detroit, Keener's weak night-time signal faded into oblivion after sunset in my neighborhood.

Bring Back "Classic Keener"

May 11, 2008 by rockinrobert

Hi All,
As I posted on a different board recently...
With the current sorry state of radio in general, and Detroit Radio in particular, NOW would be a good time for an investor with "deep pockets" to buy the 1310AM frequency from Clear Channel, and bring "Classic Keener" back to the Motor City. Clear Channel is strapped for cash, carrying a huge debt-load from acquiring too many radio properties in the late 90's and early 2K's. Their WDTW-AM-1310 didn't even "show" in the 2008 Winter Arbitron Book, and Clear Channel isn't even trying to sink any dollars into it, to make it better.
Anybody on here have a ballpark figure as to what the station is currently worth, or, more importantly, what kind of purchase offer Clear Channel would accept...to raise some badly-needed cash?
